Further Information

The Resource Manager for northern Victorian regulated water systems today announced that seasonal allocations will remain unchanged for the rest of the 2011/12 season.

“Seasonal allocations this season benefited from reserves established during the 2010/11 season and enabled allocations in all systems to reach 100% of high-reliability water shares (HRWS) for the second consecutive season,” said Resource Manager Dr Mark Bailey.

“While allocations to low-reliability water shares in the Goulburn, Loddon and Murray systems have not been possible, water is being set aside for allocations next season,” said Dr Bailey.

“With large volumes expected to be carried over into the 2012/13 season and reserves in storage for next season, the storage volumes across northern Victoria are high for this time of year. As a result, it is unlikely that a low risk of spill declaration will be possible early in the 2012/13 season in the Murray, Goulburn and Campaspe systems. Water share holders should expect that water in spillable water accounts may not be available until later in 2012 and should plan their early season water use requirements accordingly.”

Customers participating in the water trading market are reminded that the Murray-Darling Basin Authority has relaxed the rule controlling allocation trade from upstream of the Barmah Choke to downstream users. The ability to trade across the Barmah Choke will be regularly reviewed by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority and the relaxation may be lifted at any time during the season.

An updated outlook for allocations in the 2012/13 season will be issued on Tuesday 15 May 2012.
